AT&T plans WCDMA launch in 2004
March 24, 2003
Japan's largest mobile operator, NTT DoCoMo said AT&T Wireless
is to rollout WCDMA 3G services in 2004.
DoCoMo has a 16% stake in the US company and has scaled back plans
to deploy the 3G services like many other US operators because of
concerns over cost, technical problems and demand from consumers.
In late 2002, the Japanese operator said it would cut its planned
3G launch this year to four US regions from 13.
Keiji Tachikawa, Chief Executive for DoCoMo, told the press, "We
cannot wait very long for 3G [US], so we have agreed to start by
2004."
The CEO mentioned DoCoMo is working with AT&T at the moment to
introduce i-mode type services in the US. i-mode, a popular wireless
services offered by DoCoMo in Japan with over 40 million users,
offers Internet access, video calls and MMS.
