Mr. John Koo, chairman & CEO of LG Electronics, sketched out the current status and future prospects of mobile communication services in his keynote speech delivered at last week's CTIA Wireless 2003 event. Mr. John Koo talked about the global trend of the mobile communications industry and future prospects for the next generation personal mobile communication services. He also touched upon the direction that LG Electronics is gearing towards for innovative 3G mobile handsets. His speech touched upon, recent trends in the mobile handset industry, new mobile phone services, advent of the IMT2000 era and mobile phone development strategy of LG Electronics. Mr. John Koo explains, "for the past 2~3 years, handset makers in Europe put emphasis on the basic functionalities of the handset mainly focused on voice communications. However, businesses in Korea and Japan were quick to respond to the customers' appetite for new functionality and design. They were willing to experiment, and such efforts have opened up a new market, which enabled them to grow big." He also added "video conferencing became a reality for the first time in the world at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan held in Seoul, and this heralded a paradigm change in this year's mobile communications market. The dual band dual mode (DBDM) phone, which marks the opening of the 3G IMT 2000 era, was also first unveiled in the Korean market. In various ways, Korea has shown to be the trend-setter of mobile communications services." "Keeping abreast of the rapid development of the mobile communications network, LG Electronics will lead change in the US and European market with handsets that feature innovative design and diverse services, such as video on demand (VOD), multimedia messaging service (MMS), location based service (LBS), M-commerce, and game." Mr. John Koo also caught the attention of participants by showing a demonstration of the state-of-the art mobile phones featuring exquisite design and enhanced digital camera functionality. The synchronous IMT-2000 handset with a built-in camera and a 270-degree-rotating LCD screen was also shown.
