VOD may postpone launch until next year
March 25, 2003
Vodafone chairman Chris Gent is prepared to postpone its WCDMA 3G mobile
phone service until next year if the reliability of the technology does
not improve.
Europe’s biggest mobile group had planned to start a limited 3G service
in October, but Sir Christopher is concerned that the 'handover' problems
between 2G and 3G coverage areas have not been resolved.
At present, if a customer strays outside the limited 3G areas, any calls
in progress will be cut off even though the phone is supposed to be able
to switch to an existing second generation network.
Sir Christopher said: “We’re thinking about launching in October but
we could wait until January if it’s not working as well as it should.”
He added that the company could afford to wait because customer demand
was still limited. “Look at Japan: we have just signed up our nine millionth
(second generation) camera phone customer, while a rival’s 3G service
is struggling,” he pointed out.
Earlier this month the first 3G operator, Hutchison Whampoa’s 3, launched
3G service in the UK. It has signed up 10,000 clients.
Among other established operators, mmO2 and Orange are expected to launch
3G services next year, while T-Mobile is still considering its options.
