Hutchison Australia ready to launch

Hutchison Telecommunications (Australia) said Monday that final preparations are underway for the commercial launch of its 3G services.

"Hutchison has established 3G launch network capability on time and on budget," the company said.

The company, which is controlled by Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa, said stores operating under the global brand 3 will open April 15 in 20 locations and it was proceeding with final testing of its 3G handsets and network infrastructure.

"Further details of the service offering, including pricing, will be announced closer to the store openings," the group said.

Hutchison has not detailed exactly when it will commercially launch 3G services.

The services currently being introduced by 3 to Italy and the UK, where customers are facing waiting lists for handsets.

Last week Australia's largest telco Telstra, the first 3G operator in Australia, said it would spend up to $150 million on a mobile network upgrade to be first in Australia to offer 3G email, games and music applications.
