No Korean nationwide services until 2006
March 30, 2003
The Korean Ministry of Information and Communication plans to postpone
nationwide services of a new 3G mobile service, better known as IMT-2000,
until after 2006, according to officials.
The ministry will also focus on the development of nine promising IT
areas, such as intelligent robotics and telematiks, over the next 20-30
years, while pushing for the introduction of a real name system in all
public Internet forums.
In a report to President Roh Moo-hyun, Information and Communication
Minister Chin Dae-jae unveiled on the development of 3G services and other
measures aimed at setting the direction of the country's telecom policy.
The IMT-2000 service will be implemented in Seoul by the end of this
year as previously scheduled by SK Telecom and KTF, but nationwide services
will not become available until after 2006 given market conditions, Chin
said.
The government had planned to introduce the 2GHz 3G service based on
W-CDMA technology nationwide by 2006 as it expected the current frequency
range to reach its maximum capacity this year.
