Dialog launch 3G trial in Sri Lanka

March 4, 2004

Dialog GSM begun trial of 3G mobile services Tuesday in Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo, that will last for one year. The service is part of the company's ongoing 3G expansion plan that will lead to commercialisation of the service when the trial finishes.

Dialog, a subsidiary of Telecom Malaysia, is currently providing network coverage in Colombo only but it plans to extend the trial to other cities.

Dialog CEO Hans Wijayasuriya said 3G will take over the world market in two to three years time.

The company's 3G service is based on UMTS technology and will try to target young kids and consumers who are attracted by modern gadgets. The firm, which has also rolled out GPRS and EDGE, is the biggest among the four local mobile operators with a customer base of more than 850,000.
