French regulator relax 3G launch deadline
March 11, 2004
French 3G license holders have been given good news after the telecommunication regulator decided to push back the launch date for two of France's 3G license holders. Regulator ART has postponed the rollout deadline for mobile operators Orange and SFR Cegetel to the end of 2004.
The two operators have to cover the minimum of the country's 12 largest cities by the new deadline and 58% of the population by end 2005.
Technical and economic environment accounted to ART's decision to delay the launch saying that it would be difficult for operators to meet initial deadlines.
The case for the third UMTS license holder Bouygues Telecom will be examined later.
