UTStarcom introduces MovingMedia for 3G

UTStarcom announced its MovingMedia family of global wireless solutions and its comprehensive 3G product strategy. Designed with a common IP-based network architecture that leverages UTStarcom's broad experience in large-scale worldwide IP deployments, the MovingMedia family includes these three major product series: MovingMedia8000 for WCDMA/UMTS solutions; MovingMedia6000 for TD-SCDMA and Time Division CDMA (TDCDMA) solutions; and MovingMedia2000 for CDMA solutions.
The MovingMedia products are designed to provide operators with a cost-effective, scalable approach to 3G by allowing operators to share core network equipment and Radio Network Controllers (RNCs) across multiple access technologies. The hardware platform underlying the MovingMedia systems has been largely deployed in UTStarcom's IP-based PAS (Personal Access System) (iPAS) network in China, which currently supports more than 24 million subscribers.

"By using the same proven network infrastructure that has helped operators extend PAS, broadband, and VoIP services to millions of subscribers, operators can now offer high-end 3G services when demand arises. The flexibility of the MovingMedia architecture gives operators a head start in the 3G marketplace and allows them to lower the cost-and thus the risk-of 3G deployment."
In addition to its wireless infrastructure, UTStarcom will provide 3G wireless terminals, including handsets, customer premises equipment, and PC cards.
MovingMedia8000 for WCDMA Wireless Communications
The MovingMedia8000 product suite is an end-to-end 3G mobile communications solution that includes Radio Access Network (RAN) elements, core network elements, a multi-service application environment, and a network management system. Based on 3GPP UMTS/WCDMA technology, the MovingMedia8000 series offers both R99 and R4 interfaces, for easy interconnection with multivendor network elements.
The MovingMedia8000 core network uses mobile softswitch technology to deliver a wide array of services, including basic voice, supplementary services, high-speed Internet access, and videophone. With support for a host of open interfaces, including SIP, CAMEL, and Parlay, the product is designed to enable operators to add new advanced intelligent services with minimal additional investment.
To satisfy the needs of current UTStarcom customers, the MovingMedia8000 series is designed to complement and extend an operators' existing access infrastructure supporting both PAS and wireline services. The MovingMedia8000 IP-based core network can easily interconnect with an existing iPAS core network and share the same service platform, for faster time-to-market and greater economy of scale. UTStarcom believes this co-existence will enable smooth service and subscriber migration to 3G networking, protect operators' investments, and allow operators to deploy multiple families of services side-by-side using common operations and support systems (OSS).
UTStarcom customer China Netcom is currently using the MovingMedia8000 products as part of China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII) live field trials in Beijing.
MovingMedia6000 and MovingMedia2000 Series Provide More Access Options
Benefiting from the same IP-based core network as that of MovingMedia8000 series, MovingMedia6000 series is built around the 3GPP UMTS Time Division Duplex (TDD) standards and supports both TD-SCDMA and TD-CDMA access. TD-SCDMA, the emerging Chinese-developed standard, will play an important role in the China 3G market. As a TD-SCDMA Forum council member, UTStarcom has been working closely with Datang on the RNC development.
The MovingMedia6000 series also supports TD-CDMA radio technology for mobile broadband wireless access services through a partnership between UTStarcom and IPWireless.
MovingMedia2000 for CDMA completes UTStarcom's wireless network solution, and the company believes it will help the company to realize its goal for both product line and global market expansion. MovingMedia2000 series includes UTStarcom's proven Total Control PDSN product portfolio, in addition to the CDMA radio access product line that UTStarcom anticipates it will acquire upon completion of the acquisition of Hyundai Syscomm.
IP-Based Solution Helps Both Incumbent and Green Field Operators
With UTStarcom's MovingMedia product family, both incumbent and green field operators can utilize cost-effective technology while improving the CapEx efficiency of the network. For example, because all MovingMedia interfaces are standards compliant, an incumbent operator can add a new RAN subsystem onto an existing wireless network to extend wireless data service to more end-users. Alternatively, a green field operator can take advantage of the scalable and inexpensive IP-based network to deploy unique voice and data services very quickly.
