KPN to go HSDPA in 2006
March 13, 2005
Dutch telecommunications firm Royal KPN NV (KPN) announced it will start upgrading its 3G mobile phone network with HSDPA technology starting in 2006.
"We see HSDPA as a logical future step," said KPN mobile division Chief Executive Guy Demuynck at the CeBIT fair in Hanover. "It is a standard evolution of (3G) and we will start initial implementation in heavy traffic areas in 2006."
He views 3G services as "an evolution, not a revolution" but questions when 3G services will become a mass market service. "The question is, will 2005 be the breakthrough for (3G)?"
Demuynck expects the current GSM mobile networks to stay in use for the next five to 10 years.
KPN is currently testing mobile TV, regarded by some to drive the take-up of 3G services, and depending on the results of those tests the operator will launch mobile TV in 2006.
