Mobile porn sees strong rise

March 18, 2005 - source: BWCS

The supply of "Adult Services" on mobile handsets could grow into a US$5 billion business by 2010, argues a US-based research company. According to the hard-working researchers at Strategy Analytics, the current market for mobile porn is worth a mere US$400 million a year, but such is the interest that it could swell to over ten times that size within five years.

The Boston-based analysts believe that a union of consumer desire coupled with renewed vigour on the part of the mobile service providers will produce a much larger market than the company had previously predicted.

However, as if envious of the size of Strategy Analytics projections, other market research firms have been quick to come forward with their own visions of the future for mobile porn. Juniper Research recently put the size of the market for adult mobile services at over US$1 billion for 2005, growing to US$2.1 billion by 2009. In February Visiongain Publishing suggested the size of the market was US$680 million, last year and would rise to US$976 million this year.

With ever more major players arriving at the adult mobile party and an increased supply of multimedia handsets, plus the availability of new content-certification and age-verification systems it appears that the market is ready to take-off. However, despite the current excitement at the size and rate of growth of this new market, overall it is expected that mobile will account for less than 5% of the global market for adult services by 2010.
