Japanese mobile giant NTT DoCoMo has set itself a target of selling more than 20 million high-speed mobile handsets this year. This is equal to twice the number of 3G users that the company currently has.
According to Takeshi Natsuno, DoCoMo's managing director of multimedia services "More than 80 percent of the handsets we sell this year will be 3G, and the total number of 3G subscribers will be more than our competitors for sure."
The company recently introduced its so-called "pake-hodai", flat-rate, mobile data charges, which allow users low-cost access to i-mode 3G services. In February of this year, DoCoMo put its new Fujitsu-made FOMA F700i handsets on sale at Yen 10,000 less than the previous series of 900i model 3G phones. Later in the year, the operator says it will launch more 700i series phones from Panasonic, NEC and Sharp. The move is aimed at driving more customers from its 49 million mobile customer base to 3G.
DoCoMo stresses that its FOMA service is available in all "populated" areas of Japan; in addition, it has made a big play of the fact that it can be used in all subway stations in the Tokyo and Metro and Toei networks.
