MobilTel Wins Bulgarian 3G Licence
March 31, 2005 - source: BWCS
The first 3G licence to be awarded in Bulgaria has officially gone to MobilTel. The company managed to beat off its rival BTC with a bid of BLv78 million (US$51.8 million), leaving BTC to bid for the two class B UMTS licences with fellow Bulgarian mobile operator GloBul. The remaining franchises will go on sale next week.
According to Nikolay Nikolov, CEO of MobilTel, his company will cover the fee from its own funds. MobilTel will begin 3G network construction immediately, and aims to launch UMTS services in the five largest cities in Bulgaria in 2006.
