Eircom to receive Ireland's final 3G licence
March 11, 2007
Ireland's Eircom have announced that it was accepting the offer of the final 3G licence in the Irish market, originally offered to Smart Telecom, provided that certain financing arrangements are in place before 12 March 2007.
ComReg officially made the offer to the incumbent after it withdrew the licence from troubled telecoms firm Smart Telecom, based on issues surrounding a EUR100 million performance bond to be paid to ComReg by Smart. The telco fought the regulator's decision, bringing its case to the High Court in a bid to regain the licence offer. However, the action failed, leaving the way clear for Eircom to enter the 3G market.
