UAE to get 3G by 2004date: May 14, 2001 - source: Emirates Telecoms has confirmed it is to launch 3G services by early 2004 at the latest, in United Arab Emirates. Etisalat said that has budgeted to invest AED 4bn (EUR1.2bn) over the course of the next four years on technology and service upgrades. The launch has been scheduled for H2 2003, but could be slightly delayed and would only offer initial services to major cities. Saleh Al Abdooli, head of the Etisalat's engineering mobile system told 3G Bulletin that the pilot testing of transitionary services will take place in these major cities in the country and begin before the end of the year. The services will then be rolled out further across the country. Abdooli said: "It's important that we make the investments, which are substantial, on 3G now. Otherwise, we run the risk of falling behind in the technology stakes. The pilot tests scheduled for year-end will give us a good opportunity to test and evaluate all our options and other related factors."
