Globe Telecom ready for 3Gdate: May 15, 2001 Nokia signed a contract with Globe Telecom from Philippines worth $310million for the expansion of its GSM network to be 3G ready. Under the deal, Nokia will supply mobile switching centres, transit switching layer and base station controllers to expand and upgrade Globe's existing network to be 3G ready. Gerry ABlza, Globe Telecom president and chief executive, said the supply contract with Nokia includes the provision of the UltraSite base station, which addresses the need for increased voice and data traffic as well as support for third generation cellular technology. Ablaza said the base station will allow Globe Telecom to "offer 3G services in the future and to roll out new applications and services."
