Tektronix Announces Best-In-Class Portable Spectrum Analyzers For 3G Measurements

date: May 17, 2001 - source: Tektronix

Tektronix today announced a pair of innovative low-cost portable radio frequency (RF) instruments for testing third-generation (3G) networks and components.

Measurements on 3G mobile network elements call for generally higher frequencies than most inexpensive portable measurement platforms can perform. The new low-cost Tektronix R3172 and R3182 spectrum analyzers deliver ``best-in-class'' performance and integrate key features normally found only in higher-end, bench-top tools. The two compact instruments allow equipment manufacturers, network operators, and installation and maintenance (I&M) service providers to efficiently manufacture and maintain emerging communications infrastructures including 3G networks, point-to-point microwave satellite communications networks, and Local Multipoint Distribution Systems (LMDS).

``The introduction of these best-in-class spectrum analyzers reflects Tektronix' continuing effort to supply communications equipment manufacturers, network operators, and service providers with a strong portfolio of communications test products to support today's demanding applications,'' said Hannes Schaedel, vice president, Mobile Business Unit, Tektronix. ``A breakthrough at this price level, these analyzers are the first portable and affordable tools with the bandwidth to address the industry-wide need for more stringent mobile communications measurements. They can also reduce the cost of equipping manufacturing lines and field crews. Operators can control costs and stay competitive while meeting new RF measurement challenges.''

Compact Instruments a Milestone in Spectrum Analyzer Performance

The new R3172/R3182 spectrum analyzers are compact, low-cost solutions with a wide range of RF and microwave measurement applications. Technologies such as LMDS, with its 28.5-GHz operating frequency, are expected to become more widespread as they deliver wide bandwidth access across the ``last mile'' to subscribers. Similarly, point-to-point satellite applications (with their 18-GHz operating frequency) are gaining popularity. All of these emerging technologies are well beyond the 3-GHz limit of most present-day field spectrum analyzers.

From a performance standpoint, the R3172 and R3182 outpace all other portable solutions in bandwidth, input sensitivity and signal purity. The R3172 offers 26.5-GHz bandwidth, while the R3182 provides 40-GHz bandwidth to meet the needs of demanding LMDS measurements and more. Both models include a wealth of pre-programmed measurements for mobile communications. Ranging from spurious noise tests to power measurements, these tests simplify instrument setup and make measurement procedures easier for users of all experience levels. The fast measurement speeds of the R3172/R3182 models boost productivity (and manufacturing throughput) even further.

Both new models integrate an RF mixer stage (normally an external device for instruments in the portable class) into the instrument itself. This feature allows users to take an instrument into the field and measure satellite up/down converters directly, eliminating the accuracy compromise of an external mixer as well as its cost.

The R3172 and R3182 spectrum analyzers were developed by Advantest, Japan, and are marketed and supported in North America by Tektronix under a strategic alliance formed in 1993. The new product is part of a full line of digital wireless and communications test products offered by Tektronix.
