CommWorks and Lucent Conduct Interoperability Testing on 3G Mobile IP Solutiondate: May 20, 2001 - source: CommWorks and Lucent signed a testing agreement to jointly deliver a mobile IP, standards-based 3G high-speed wireless network offering for service providers worldwide. Targeting the CDMA markets and PCS networks, the interoperability testing will provide wireless operators the flexibility to introduce advanced data services to meet emerging market demands at their own pace. The CDMA market consists of 40 countries and boasts more than 71 million subscribers. The testing agreement is focused on cdma2000 1X networks, based on a 3G standard approved by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The interoperability testing allows service providers to migrate their networks from digital cellular to next-generation networks over time. Service providers can continue using their existing infrastructure to recoup their investments while preparing to deploy next-generation services. At each new network phase, service providers will be able to offer higher network speeds to access simultaneous audio, video and text data services. The network speed currently operating at 144 kbps, twice faster than today's dial-up PC modems, will increase to 2Mbps. It will also provide advanced packet data technology for enhanced network efficiency and allow service providers to enjoy a nearly two-fold increase in wireless channel capacity. Subscribers will enjoy global interoperability among different operators' networks and mobile phones, and more sophisticated application services. Under the terms of agreement, CommWorks and Lucent will conduct interoperability testing between Lucent's Flexent" CDMA network equipment and CommWorks' high-speed data solution. CommWorks will provide access to Mobile IP Data infrastructure through its Total Control 1000 3G Packet Data Serving Node, an inter-networking device that connects CDMA wireless network infrastructure equipment to an IP network. It will also provide the CommWorks 4302 Foreign Agent Control Node, which provides the control mechanism for managing multiple PDSNs.
