BT uses circuit switching at phase one of the 3G Projectdate: May 21, 2001 British Telecommunications first commercial 3G services at Isle of Man will not offer 'always-on' connections and at lower speed than expected. BT said at phase one of the project, the network will still be based on the conventional circuit-switched network and will not have 'always-on' connection to the Internet for the users until later on at phase two. The speed of the network according to BT will only be 64kbps at the beginning of the launch date and not the expected 384kbps 3G services can handle. However it is still six times faster than WAP services at 9.6kbps. BT would like to test the network with 'circuit' switching before migrating to 'packet' switching technology. A spokesman from BT said, it won't be full 3G experience, the network can only offer videoconferencing and streaming videos to users with plug-ins to the NEC handsets.
