Voice calls may be free will 3G servicesdate: May 21, 2001 Mobile 3G operators may not charge for voice calls when they first roll-out 3G commercial services later this year. This is an incentive to encourage sign-up rate for the 3G services by offering free voice calls, said Svante Stenbom of Siemens AG. Users only have to pay for data sent and received on their handsets. In return for the free calls, users have to opt-in to listen to a short advertisement messages on their handsets and to allow operators to track their position via the handsets for marketing research. Consumer tracking will be the main key to the success of 3G and predicted to generate 10% of the operator's revenue. In theory, an operator could tell where you are in high street and beam adverts from a shop near-by to your handsets telling you there is a special offer or a new product at the shop.
