Korean operators upset by delay in 3G launch datedate: May 23, 2001 Korea's 3G operators slammed the decision to delay the commercial lunch of 3G services in Korea beyond the set deadline of May 2002. Chae Jong-seok, director of 3G division at Electronic and Telecommunication Research Institute said it does not believed it is possible to roll-out 3G service in May next year because carriers and government scientists must conduct more tests on the network which caused several stability problems. "Further testing is needed to guarantee users will not experiences any problems", he said. However 3G license holders theorised the sudden changed by the government is to favour for the third and final 3G license to be sold using the CDMA2000 standard, as this can give more times for the final late runner to catch up. "The sudden change is an political purposes", said a spokmans from Korea Telecom and added, given the huge investment cost, the operators cannot delay the launch any longer than expected. Current 3G license holders, SK Telecom and Korea Telecom wants to roll-out the 3G services next May in time for the Football World Cup 2002. They were still hoping to bring out live football results and live streaming video clips of golden goals to the 3G handsets.
