Sonera delays 3G launch date - confirmeddate: May 24, 2001 Kaj-Erik Relander, Managing Director of Sonera, confirmed today it is going to delay the introduction of third-generation 3G service in Finland and any countries it is involved in due a lack of handsets available for consumers. He said in an interview that Sonera has to cancel many of its investments in 3G technology because no handset makers were ready to mess produce 3G phones for Finland's 3G launch date set by the government of early 2002. He also added without any handsets guarantee to be delivered from makers like Nokia and Ericsson on time, no massive engineering or construction projects would be carried out any further on 3G networks. Scandinavian mobile producers are having a difficult time, the features 3G technology supposed to handle cannot be delivered at the current level of technology. One of the glitch makers are having with 3G phones is that it drains so much battery power with the amount of functions the phone have, it would fizzle in a matter of minutes that would keep a 2G phone running for days, a Nokia spokesman said.
