South Korea delays 3G launch datedate: May 24, 2001 Yang Seung-taik, Minister of Information and Communications, on Thursday confirmed South Korea have to delay the launch of 3G services to the end of next year or early 2003 and therefore cannot introduce the service in time for the 2002 Football World Cup. The government was aiming to launch the 3G service base on the widely popular WCDMA standard in May next year. He also told the press a US or Canadian firms have decided to join bid with a South Korean, possible LG Telecom operator for the third and final 3G license on offer based on the cdma2000 standard. The foreign company was undisclosed to the press. LG Telecom is reportedly in talks with the US company Telesystem International Wireless over the consortium bidding.
