Public Access WLANs Threaten 3G Market Potentialdate: May 24, 2001 - source: The market opportunity is excellent for public access wireless Local Area Network services in Europe. In contrast to 3G systems, WLAN technology is simple, cheap, easy to deploy and available today. It offers wireless data rates that 3G operators cannot match. According to a new white paper by Re:Think!, a London-based consultancy network, public access WLANs and hybrid WLAN/GPRS systems have the potential to impact the growth of the market for 3G mobile data access. "WLAN technology, such as 802.11, poses a disruptive threat to 3G mobile operators and challenges DSL, cable modem and fixed wireless access providers in last mile bandwidth provisioning…but cumbersome regulation could still stifle market innovation" said Ivan Croxford, a consultant at Re:Think! Via a comparative analysis of the current market and regulatory environments in several European countries, notably Finland, France and the UK, the paper argues that it is essential for service providers, vendors, regulators and standards bodies to rethink their approach to the commercialisation of public WLAN services.
