KDDI demonstrates cdma2000 technologydate: May 25, 2001 - source: KDDI has been demonstrating its planned service using cdma2000 1xEV-DO standard based on the high data rate (HDR) technology developed by Qualcomm Inc. It is scheduled to go into commercial operation some time in 2002. The specifications of cdma2000 1xEV-DO allow data to be sent over wireless networks at high speeds of up to 2.4Mbps. In the demonstration, KDDI showed how video data could be distributed over a wireless network to a PC, a personal digital assistant hand-held device and a mobile phone handset (photo below) at respective bit rates of about 300kbps, 200kbps and 120-140kbps. In all three cases the video data was transferred smoothly to the recipient device without any interference or interruptions. "This means video data prepared for services based on asymmetric digital subscriber line technology can also be sent to users via wireless networks," explained the company official. In order to carry out the demonstration, KDDI built a temporary antenna base station near Tokyo Big Sight where the event is held. The company, which employed the latest version for the demos, says that it will continue working to make the wireless service more dependable.
