Taiwan taking 3G applications in Julydate: May 28, 2001 Taiwan's transportation and communications ministry said at a press conference the government had approved a plan to auction five 3G licences and will begin taking applications in July, with the deadline set at October. The government planned to start reviewing the submissions in October and conduct the auction close door in mid-November and then award the five licenses in early December. A spokesman from the communication department said the five licences include four new ones and one for the now-outdated first generation advanced mobile phone system (AMPS), which would be withdrawn from state-controlled Chunghwa Telecom and re-auctioned as a 3G licence. He also said the communications ministry was studying plans to set a base price of around $250million for the auction and whether to announce that price before the auction. Three licenses will be awarded to home and existent operators and one to a foreign firm; each license will last for 15 years. Operator's known to be interested in a Taiwan 3G licence includes Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Cellular, Far EasTone and KG Telecom. see also: Taiwan 3G information
