Only PCCW and Telstra wants Taiwan's 3G licensedate: May 29, 2001 According to a local Hong Kong paper the only parties interested in Taiwan's five 3G licenses on offered are Pacific Century CyberWorks from Hong Kong and Australian based Telstra. Both companies declined to comment on the report. Local giant wireless operators Chunghwa Telecom and Taiwan Cellular may bid for the license only if they are partnering with foreign firms to avoid the risk associate with the enormous cost of constructing the networks. Rumors were spreading in the Hong Kong stock market on Tuesday morning that operators Hutchison Whampoa and SmarTone have no plans at the moment in any Taiwan's 3G licenses and properly not interested due to the large geography coverage, low population density rate. Taiwan plans to announce the five winners in December and each license will last for 15 years.
