South Korea the world's first 3G networkdate: May 31, 2001 South Korea may have beaten the rest of the world to the punch by announcing the roll out of a live 3G mobile network. SK Telecom upgraded its 2G wireless network to 2.5G just after January and discovered that they've able to achieve transmission speed of 144kbps over the network, this make it the fastest wireless telecom network in the world at the moment. Under the ITU standard the speed makes it fast enough to qualify as 3G and after many debated with officials from both sides, The Ministry of Information and Communication from Korea claimed "we have the world's first 3G network". Qualcomm that supplied the CDMA2000 network to SK Korea said Korea can rightfully claimed it is offering the first 3G services in the world. SK Telecom said it would save £2billion by using the new services that can offer anything 3G systems can at a more economical cost to its 10 million users.
