LG Becomes the First in Korea to Export cdma2000 1X
System to the U.S.
date: May 31, 2001
LG Electronics has become the first in Korea to export cdma2000 1X systems
to the U.S., the home of synchronous CDMA technology.
LG Electronics announced that it signed a 3-year US$50 million agreement
with Monet Mobile Networks to supply cdma2000 1X systems for Monet's high-speed
wireless Internet data service.
Based on the agreement signed between Executive Vice President Jung-gun
Park of LGE Information Communication System Company and President Richard
Kingston of Monet, LGE will deliver 2.5G synchronous cdma2000 1X system
developed with LGE's own technology to the central region of the U.S.
covering the Dakotas and other states in the latter half of 2001 as the
first phase. In the next phase until 2002, it will expand its supply to
other regions.
The system LGE will supply is the synchronous cdma2000 1X system including
BSC (base station controller) and BTS (base stations). Monet plans to
launch commercial services in December after completing system deployment
and trial operation. And it will migrate to cdma2000 1XEV-DO (data only)
system by the first half of 2002.
"Monet plans to become a nationwide wireless Internet data service
provider with the acquisition of additional licenses in other regions
in the U.S," explained Executive Vice President Jung-kwon Park. Adding,
"This means that LGE's equipment supply to Monet will most likely
expand in the future. LGE welcomes the agreement with Monet as it will
help us widen our presence as the leading system supplier to other major
CDMA service providers here."
