Sharp and Qualcomm believes to have improved video qualitydate: May 2, 2002 Sharp and Qualcomm have jointly developed a component for 3G mobile phones that can sharply enhances the quality of video images, a local Japanese paper reported. The technology makes data exchanges with the phone's semiconductor 40% faster than comparable devices. The technology comprises a central processing unit and a flash memory chip for short-term data storage. The firms developed a special memory chip for the CPU designed to make better use of the processor's number-crunching capacity. The partners claim their technology will make it easier for cell phone manufacturers to develop new models, as it will obviate the need to test the compatibility of memory chips and CPU chipsets. A Qualcomm CPU chipset is used in the new component, and Sharp will start mass-producing the flash memory chips in July. The firms will promote the devices mainly among Japanese and South Korean manufacturers of phones using the code division multiple access standard, the sources said.
