ITU approves EV-DO as 3Gdate: May 8, 2002 It has been reported that the ITU has now put its stamp of approval on the cdma2000 1x EV-DO standard as a 3G technology. The ITU confirmation comes close on the heels of US operator Sprint's 2.4Mbps data test call under lab conditions using Lucent's 1x EV-DO equipment. The 1xEV-DO technology, currently commercially available only in South Korea, is optimised for packet data services. Its ASICs have been in production since September last year with devices and networks based on them already being designed and manufactured. Although cdma2000 1xRTT has been classified as a 3G technology many do not believe that the speeds that is capable of mean that it is truly 3G. 3G Bulletin believes that this is good news for cdma2000 operators that are currently claiming to have 3G with 2.5G equivalent data speeds.
