SingTel sees 3G in 2003date: May 13, 2002 SingTel expects to launch 3G services in 2003 in Singapore, even as it is lobbying for the regulator to relax the 2004 roll out deadline for such services. SingTel's CEO told reporters on Friday the company would "definitely roll out sometime in 2003" but it would be a limited service. SingTel was awarded 3G licenses in Singapore, had asked the Infocomm Development Authority to relax the deadline requirements which call for island wide roll out by end 2004. The CEO said investments in 3G needed to be done carefully, given the uncertainty surrounding the technology and lack of common standards in the industry. He said equipment prices have been coming off, so a slower launch would benefit SingTel. Telco operators would need to invest at least S$500 million to roll out their 3G networks.
