NEC supplies 3G phones to China Mobiledate: May 22, 2002 NEC on Tuesday became the first Japanese company to supply handsets for China Mobile's third-generation cellular phone service in China, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported in its Wednesday morning edition. China Mobile launched a cell phone-based data communications service using the GPRS format on May 17. The new service enables users to download news, games, maps, weather forecasts and other information on cell phones, the financial daily reported. NEC will annually supply several hundreds of thousands of folding cell phones for the new service. The company will ship cell phones from its plant in Wuhan, Hubei Province. Some 160 million people in China are cell phone subscribers, and the number is increasing by several million each month. Demand for data communications services is also expected to grow sharply.
