KDDI Signs 334,000 3G Subscribers in First Month of CDMA2000 1X Voice and Data Service Offeringsdate: May 23, 2002 KDDI, Japan's second largest wireless network operator, has surpassed its initial projections by signing 334,000 3G subscribers in the first 30 days in which the company has offered 3G voice and data services. KDDI launched its CDMA 2000 1X voice and data services on April 1 on its all Motorola supplied wireless radio access network. CDMA2000 1X technology nearly doubles the voice capacity on the network and is capable of transmitting data at a peak rate of up to 153kbps. "The response from our new 1X customers about the 3G data services has been overwhelmingly positive. The tremendous and quick growth in the first month of offerings is better than we had forecast," said Tadashi Onodera, president of KDDI Corp. "We have surpassed the 280,000 subscribers we projected in April, and it remains our goal to reach seven million subscribers by March 31, 2003." "We are proud of the initial success of the CDMA 1X 3G service offerings. We had hoped that the nationwide launch and the considerably faster data speeds offered by 1X technology would attract new and existing subscribers to KDDI." said Simon Leung, corporate vice president and general manager for the Asia-Pacific Region for Motorola's Global Telecom Solutions Sector. KDDI has been offering its customers nationwide packet data mobile services since Jan. 7, 2000. The CDMA2000 1X architecture builds upon existing 2G or 2.5G networks by adding packet based network elements.
