NTT DoCoMo to Develop WAP 2.0-Compatible Dual Browser for FOMA Phonesdate: May 23, 2002 NTT DoCoMo announced today that it will develop new 3G handsets equipped with a dual browser capable of handling both -compatible HTML and XHTML Mobile Profile + WAP CSS mark-up languages. The company plans to introduce the handsets by the end of this year. XHTML Mobile Profile + WAP CSS is the mark-up language for WAP2.0, the international standard for mobile internet services. As a member of the WAP Forum since the association's foundation, DoCoMo has been instrumental in paving the way for WAP2.0 standardization in order to stimulate the global market for mobile multimedia services. The company has been studying the feasibility of incorporating WAP2.0 technologies into its FOMA handsets since the WAP Forum announced standardized specifications on January 18 of this year. Existing FOMA handsets are compatible with the transmission protocol of the WAP2.0, but not the language specifications. The next version of FOMA handsets will be fully compatible with all WAP2.0 specifications. Moreover, because XHTML and HTML are functionally compatible, they enable i-mode content providers to take advantage of their vast know-how to develop content for next-series of WAP phones. Conversely, WAP content providers can also easily provide content to i-mode users with next version of FOMA handsets.
