Malaysia's Time to go solo on 3G biddate: May 24, 2002 Malaysia's smallest cellular firm, Time dotCom, said on Friday it would make a solo bid for a 3G mobile licence. "Yes, the answer is yes," company chairman Wan Muhamad Wan Ibrahim said in a reply to reporters' question whether Time would go solo or team up with a rival to bid for a 3G licence. Asked about the firm's financial prospect, he said: "We expect a profit within the year." Time Chief Executive Officer Robert Fox said the company's mobile subscriber base was "slightly under 600,000." Malaysia's mobile industry is overcrowded with five telecom firms servicing a population of 23 million, and analysts expect the number of operators to be reduced to three with the advent of costly 3G technology. The country will hold a "beauty parade" in July to pick three winners for licences to run high-speed mobile Internet services. Local operators have until end-May to submit their bids.
