Japanese 3G developments include WLAN accessdate: May 27, 2002 KDDI is the latest operator to announce that it is planning to integrate WLAN technology into its 3G offering. The Japanese operator is to use Cisco System's new router to launch a service combining its proposed cdma2000 1x EV-DO network cellphones and WLAN. KDDI's plans are based on a router, developed by Cisco's Japanese unit for use inside a car, which allows a subscriber to access the internet via their laptops and other mobile devices using a 3G or WLAN network. The system works by automatically switching over to WLAN when the car is outside or near an area with such a network and then switching back to 3G when it's away.
