Samsung developed WCDMA phonesdate: May 28, 2002 Samsung Electronics reported on May 27 that it has completed the development of W-CDMA phones (model name: SPH-W1000) and has successfully launched a trial service of 3G (third generation) mobile phones. The W-CDMA phones that Samsung has developed provide a TFT-LCD screen and ample sound functions. Volume production is expected to kick off early next year when a full rollout of 3G services is planned to start in Korea. Samsung officials say the development should mark a turnaround in the mobile phone market, and that the firm has the capabilities to produce both synchronous CDMA 2000 1x EV-DO and asynchronous W-CDMA phones to meet all 3G standards.
