Lucent Announces It Has Equipped More Than 25,000 Base Stations Worldwide to Support 3G CDMA2000date: May 30, 2002 Lucent Technologies announced it has equipped more than 25,000 base stations worldwide to support 3G CDMA2000 technology. Using CDMA2000 1X technology, Lucent's CDMA customers can double voice capacity and provide high-speed data services at speeds of up to 153 kbps, nearly 10 times faster than what is available on 2G networks. Lucent's CDMA customers simply add channel cards and make software upgrades to existing Lucent base stations to enable these advanced 3G capabilities. Channel cards are the key hardware component needed to upgrade an existing Lucent CDMA base station, providing a cost-effective and smooth migration to 3G voice and data services. Lucent has shipped this equipment to customers in North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. "This significant milestone underscores our ability to rapidly deploy 3G CDMA2000 networks and equipment worldwide and further reinforces our leadership in spread-spectrum 3G technology," said Jim Brewington, president of Lucent's Mobility Solutions Group. "Our high-capacity voice and high-speed data solutions will allow our customers to compete more effectively and profitably, while paving the way for them to offer high-speed data services to enterprise customers -- a market with pent-up demand for these services."
