Only 20,000 handset sold in the UK by Three
May 6, 2003
Three UK, the first 3G operator in Europe, has sold 20,000 handsets in
the UK since its recent launch in early March, which means that the company
is signing up customers at a rate of 200 a day.
According to a report in the Financial Times newspaper, the results are
encouraging to analysts who watch the sector, who said that the low numbers
are not surprising given the small number of 3G- enabled handsets on sale.
However, they also said that the figures suggest that it is highly unlikely
that the company will reach its target of having signed up 1m customers
in the country by the end of the year. An analyst at the city predicts
only 200,000 handsets would sold by the end of the year.
The company is reporting that the most popular service offered by Three,
is the video call which cost 50p a minute, is one of 3’s most expensive
services.
Three's parent company, Hutchison Whampoa, has recalled commercial director
Keith Bradley to Hong Kong last week after widespread problems with the
carrier's launch of next-generation services and slow sign-up rate.
3 UK is offering three packages: a pay-as-you-go deal with no monthly
rental, and two packages with bundled voice, video and e-mail allowances
priced at £60 and £100 per month. Whereas half-price handsets
had previously only been for the latter two packages, 3 said they would
also be available to pay-as-you-go customers until the end of May to push
up handset sale.
The 3 operations are closely scrutinised by other European operators
who have delayed the launch of their own 3G services, which provide faster
download speeds for video clips and music but require expensive new networks.
