KPN's i-mode Disappointment

May 12, 2003 - source: BWCS

The Dutch mobile operator KPN has revealed that its i-mode mobile internet service is performing below the company’s expectations, although it is still confident it can meet ambitious end of year targets. According to a report from Dow Jones Newswires, KPN’s CEO, Ad Scheepbouwer, is hoping that a range of new i-mode-enabled handsets, coupled with a new pricing structure, will boost take-up to give the operator more than one million i-mode customers by the end of this year. However, with just 285,000 i-mode customers by the end of March, this may be something of a tall order.

KPN has offered i-mode services in the Netherlands and Germany for more than a year, while it launched in Belgium in the second half of 2002. The Dutch company has licensed i-mode technology from its minority shareholder, NTT DoCoMo of Japan, which had 38.1 million i-mode customers in its domestic market at the end of April. The mobile internet service accounts for around 86% of DoCoMo’s total subscriber base.
