More 3 shops to be opened in Australia
May 13, 2003
3 Australia, a unit of Hutchison Telecommunications, will boost the number
of retail outlets selling its 3G video phone, and has set itself a new
cashflow target.
Chief executive Kevin Russell said the telco expected to be free cashflow
positive by the end of 2003 or by early 2004.
However, it would be 2006 before the company would be paying back debt,
given a series of investments to be made over the next two to three years.
Mr Russell said there would be 100 additional points of sale for 3G phones
through existing Orange dealers and Strathfield Car Radio.
These would be opened progressively through May and June.
"By the end of September, we expect to have close to 250 retail points
of presence selling 3," he said.
The 3 services are already being sold through 19 company owned Sydney
and Melbourne stores stocking the new 3 phones, made by NEC and Motorola.
"We are launching a similarly differentiated and aggressive product offering
into the business market in the third quarter of this year," he said.
It is expected to be rolled out to other major Australian cities in the
September quarter and then also provide links with Hong Kong and Sweden
services.
Hutchison is spending up to $3 billion establishing the service in Australia
and has built a specialist 3G network.
