Qualcomm Congratulates China Unicom on Reaching 10 Million Subscriber
Milestone
May 16, 2003
Qualcomm Incorporated extended congratulations to China Unicom following
the Chinese mobile carrier's announcement that it is now supporting 10
million subscribers on its CDMA network.
"We are proud to congratulate China Unicom on this great achievement,"
said Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs, chairman and CEO of Qualcomm. "With the launch
of their CDMA2000 1X network, and their commitment to Qualcomm's BREW
platform, China Unicom is now poised to offer its fast-growing customer
base an exciting range of data applications and services that make China
one of the world's most advanced mobile communications markets."
China Unicom's CDMA network was launched in January 2002. Its first milestone
of four million users came in October 2002. By the end of 2002, Unicom
had met its initial goal of a first-year subscriber base of seven million
users. In 2003, Unicom has continued its growth with the rollout of CDMA2000
1X services, its planned nationwide launch of BREW-enabled data services,
and the formation of a joint venture with Qualcomm, Unicom-BREW Telecommunication
Technologies, to encourage the domestic developer community.
3G CDMA has been launched by 43 operators in 24 countries across Asia
Pacific, Australia, Eastern Europe and the Americas. CDMA2000 1X operators
are experiencing increased average revenue per user (ARPU) in data-related
services, support from an expanded base of device manufacturers and myriad
applications from an increasing number of content developers. Qualcomm
supports 3G CDMA with chipsets and system software solutions.
