ACPO fears child abuse images spreading on 3G
May 16, 2003
In the light of advance mobile communications and handsets with built-in
video camera, the UK Association of Chief Police Officer (ACPO) are increasingly
worry over child abuse images taking and distribution using 3G video phones.
This was mentioned in the first edition of Child Abuse & The Internet
- a quarterly newsletter aimed at high-level law enforcement agencies.
The use of high speed mobile network and camera could mean that abuse
can "be recorded, reproduced and circulated with ease," said Detective
Inspector Terry Jones, Greater Manchester Police Abusive Images Unit.
Carole Howlett, Deputy Assistant Commissioner for the ACPO, said there
needs to be more understanding of the scale of "demand for viewing" on
such technology.
The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) are activity engaging major mobile
operators on this issue and many have become members of the IWF to fight
against child abuse images on advance mobile phones. Peter Robbins, Chief
Executive of IWF said, "This is a great asset in light of the advances
in mobile technology and in particular in respect of the next generation
of mobiles (3G)". Three, the first 3G operator in the UK, is also a member
of the IWF and the first 3G operator to have joined the fight against
child abuse images.
At the moment, the Home Office has no government committee looking into
the potential dangers of 3G. The director of Childwatch International,
Lesley Verne, said she was horrified that no one was doing any research
into the potential abuse of 3G by paedophiles. The ability to download,
view and even send video images could aid paedophiles.
