More Cuts for 3
May 16, 2003 - source: BWCS
The UK’s first 3G mobile operator is reportedly considering a further
drop in its handset prices after customers have failed to be won over
by the its new high-speed service. According to a report from the UK newspaper
The Independent, the Hutchison Whampoa backed operator 3 may be forced
to halve its current handset prices in an attempt to attract users. The
company has already halved its prices from £399 to £199, with this new
cut taking the price of phones to around the £100 mark.
While Hutchison said that 3 signed up 10,000 customers in its first 17
days of operations after its commercial launch on 3 March, speculation
is mounting that this figure does not give an accurate picture of actual
paying subscribers. Many handsets were given out free to so-called VIP
customers. Meanwhile, under the operator’s conditions, customers can return
their phones within 14 days and get their money back. While 3 has had
problems keeping track of customer returns, it is thought that the returns
rate could be as high as 25%, with users reporting technical problems
with the new phones. Hutchison’s latest price cut is aimed at ensuring
that 3 meets its end-of-year target of signing up one million 3G customers.
