3 HK set to launch on 03/06/03 |
Hong Kong's Hutchison Telecom, part of Hutchison Whampoa, said it had begun a second set of online registrations for its WCDMA 3G services in Hong Kong, but wouldn't be drawn out on a launch date. But inside source from the company said the launch date will be 03/06/03 and will be branded under the name 3 HK.
The South China Morning Post reported Hutchison would launch 3G operations in Hong Kong in the summer. It has already launched 3G services in the U.K., Italy, Austria, Sweden and Australia under the brand-name "3".
Only the NEC e606 will be available on launch and the price for the model is set to be on sale for HK$4000 (£350) without discount.
"We started a pre-registration campaign on Sunday that allows customers to click on banner advertisements placed on Web sites such as Yahoo!, but we started online registration on March 3," a spokeswoman at Hutchison Telecom said. "But we still don't have a fixed time for the launch."
Hutchison began marketing its "3" brand network in nine countries March 3. The spokeswoman declined to comment on how many users have pre-registered for the Hong Kong service so far, but analysts predicted less than a thousand people have registered interest in the new technology that is having teething problems for many European users.
Hutchison Hong Kong was awarded a 3G license in Hong Kong on October 2001.
