HK Sunday to launch next generation service in 4Q 2004
May 22, 2003
Sunday Communications, Hong Kong's smallest mobile phone operator, will
likely wait until 2005 before launching 3G wireless operations, Managing
Director Bruce Hicks told the press, adding to a chorus of negative announcements
on the beleaguered next-generation technology.
Hicks told reporters after the firm's annual general meeting that a 2005
3G launch was "probably more realistic" in the fourth quarter of 2004.
Sunday is one of four companies in Hong Kong with a 3G license.
"We won't make any commitments to 3G until we see that the technology
is ready and the market place is ready, and at this stage it is premature
for that," he told reporters.
In March, Hicks said Sunday planned to launch 3G either in the fourth
quarter of 2004 or early 2005. "I'd have to say I think things are slipping
a bit," he said. "We will continue to get ready without committing investment."
Hicks comments came as rival Hutchison Whampoa announced the group plans
to launch 3G service in Hong Kong next month.
Mid last year, Sunday hinted it could delay the launch of its 3G service
until 2005.
