Hutchison confirmed to launch 3G next month in Hong Kong
May 23, 2003
Hong Kong's Hutchison Telecom, part of Hutchison Whampoa, confirmed the
group will launch its 3G mobile phone service in Hong Kong next month.
Company chairman Li Ka-shing Mr Li said he was "very optimistic" about
the company's 3G services and that he believes they will "achieve break-even
very soon".
Last week, The South China Morning Post reported the ever-bullish Hutchison
would launch 3G operations in Hong Kong in the summer.
Hutchison had begun a second set of online registrations for its WCDMA
3G services in Hong Kong, but wouldn't be drawn out on a launch date.
Hong Kong's smallest mobile operator Sunday Communications may not launch
3G services until 2005.
In the general meeting, Mr Li said that he believed that by the end of
2006, the company's 3G operations in Europe would be even healthier than
that of Orange when it was sold to Mannesmann in 1999.
Hutchison managing director Canning Fok said 3 UK now has 25,000 customers,
and in Italy it has reached 90,000 and expects 3 Italy to sign up 100,000
customers by the end of this month.
The group has sold more than half of its holdings this month in telecommunications
giants Vodafone Group and Deutsche Telekom for just over £15billion to
fund the tough fight for 3G customers in Europe.
