D2 and T-Mobile not sure on launch date
May 29, 2003
Vodafone D2 and T-Mobile, which together have about 80% of the German
market, appear less certain of 3G launch dates than they were earlier
this year. The head of Deutsche Telekom's German wireless unit said he'll
only launch if teething problems are resolved.
Juergen von Kuczkowski, managing director of Vodafone D2, said he wouldn't
set a date for the launch, according to the spokesman. "Whether it's the
second half or another date is completely open," the spokesman said.
T-Mobile, plans to start 3G services in Germany in the fall. "But our
customers shouldn't be guinea pigs," said Timotheus Hoettges, head of
T-Mobile Germany.
"It's not about sticking to a deadline at any price. We'll start only
if our criteria on quality are met," he said. A T-Mobile spokesman confirmed
his comments.
Vodafone and T-Mobile are banking on faster mobile Internet services
to boost sales as customer growth slows in their main markets. But the
ability to switch calls, known as 'handover', smoothly between 3G and
2G networks and handset availability are concerns for the operators, which
spent more than EUR8 billion each on 3G licenses in Germany alone.
