VOD Australia to decide this year on launch date

Vodafone Australia will decide this year whether to build a 3G network in Australia or team up with an existing operator.

Vodafone Australia said it hoped to launch the costly W-CDMA network in the year to March, 2005 as part of a global rollout.

"We continue to consider our options but we will be needing to make some firm decisions this calendar year," Vodafone Australia managing director Grahame Maher told reporters.

"That is likely to be some combination of us either building something, sharing a structure with someone, or if there happens to be an acquisition - although I don't see that happening this year - there could be another model."

Vodafone's most likely partner is Hutchison Whampoa's Australian business which is spending A$3 billion on 3G in Australia. It is the only company to launch 3G in Australia so far.
