Spain Set To Force The 3G Pace

May 31, 2003 - source: BWCS

The Spanish government looks set to enforce its target of 3G launches in early 2004. According to reports in the Spanish business daily Cinco Dias, Science and Technology Minister Josep Pique is locked in discussion with the country’s four UMTS licensees. Pique is determined to ensure a launch of 3G services in the first quarter of 2004.

The minister is said to have demanded that Xfera SA, Amena, Telefonica Moviles and Vodafone Group all hand in their 3G roll out plans. The government is keen to agree a start date in early 2004 and wants each 3G licence holder to outline the steps they will be taking over the next few months to prepare for launch.

According to Cinco Dias, Pique wants the four to commit themselves to a definite launch date. He argues that his government has completed its part of the bargain by helping the operators to restructure the euros 7 billion worth of financial guarantees which they had made in order to ensure network roll out.
